Student Advocate

Do you have a concern or problem with which you need assistance? 

Alena C. Hampton, Ph.D., Director of Student Experience, can serve as an advocate to help you find a solution and resolve your concern.  As a student advocate, she will informally investigate complaints and will advocate on behalf of the student.

NOTICE: The services provided by Dr. Hampton are confidential and independent from other University entities.  She does not take part in any formal grievance procedures at Virginia Commonwealth University, and will not disclose your information without your permission to do so.  Please note that confidentiality will not be observed in instances of potential harm or injury.  The student advocate is not a confidential resource for matters mandated by federal or state law to be reported, such as sexual assault or harassment.  Any disclosures made to the student advocate with regard to these matters must be reported to the appropriate University personnel. 


Why Contact the Student Advocate?

The student advocate can help you with your problem by clarifying university policy, making appropriate referrals, and helping you to develop options in an effort to find solutions.  If you are seeking an informal means for resolving an issue, the student advocate can help.  Dr. Hampton is a resource for health sciences students wherein you can discuss concerns regarding customer service issues, communication disconnects, or the inability to access student services in a timely manner.  She will informally investigate student concerns without issuing judgments or decisions.  She does not arbitrate, adjudicate, or participate in any internal or external process.


The Student Advocate will:

  • Provide a confidential and safe environment to talk
  • Listen to concerns and complaints                        
  • Present options and help to evaluate those options
  • Help students understand university policies and procedures 
  • Perform informal investigations
  • Assist students in the pursuit of a resolution
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources
  • Recommend changes to university policies and procedures 
  • Report trends back to the university

  The Student Advocate will not:

  • Make judgments or decisions
  • Overturn academic actions
  • Take part in formal grievance procedures
  • Provide legal advice
