Vice President for Health Sciences

VCU Vice President for Health Sciences, and VCU Health System Chief Executive Officer


Located on Virginia Commonwealth University’s MCV Campus in Richmond, and in partnership with the VCU Health System, the Office of the Vice President for Health Sciences oversees the five health sciences schools (Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy) as well as the Massey Cancer Center. Areas of responsibility include academic affairs, academic and research space management, financial and administrative affairs, and Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Care.

More than 4,100 students each year participate in more than 50 degree programs offered at the undergraduate, graduate and first-professional levels as well post-baccalaureate and post-master’s certificate programs.

As a growing academic health sciences center, VCU Health Sciences maintains an aggressive research portfolio. Total research awards amounted to approximately $150 million in fiscal year 2016, which represented approximately 54 percent of the university’s total research awards.

Executive Liaison

Tedra Baskerville is the Executive Liaison to the Chief Executive Officer of VCU Health and Vice President for VCU Health Sciences. She has more than 13 years of experience in health care administration and academics and has a Master’s in Business Administration Ms. Baskerville is the primary point of contact for the Office of the CEO/VP. She serves as a resource to members of the health system and university team in coordination of various meetings, events and special projects.

Joseph Cirillo is the Special Assistant to the Vice President for Health Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University. Mr. Cirillo has 20 years experience in an academic medical center setting and another 8 years in various other health care settings. His experience in the health care arena spans a wide breadth of areas including process improvement, information technology management, web center management, financial analysis, strategic planning and executive level administrative support.

Nkanta Hines, M.Sc., MBA

Associate Vice President and Chief of Staff

Nkanta Hines, M.Sc., MBA is the Associate Vice President and Chief of Staff to the CEO of VCU Health System and Vice President of Health Sciences. He oversees strategic initiatives and serves as a vital link between the CEO/VP and the constituents of VCU Health System and VCU. Hines has a key role in logistics, planning and communicating with all members of the leadership team, along with management responsibility and accountability for improving operational efficiency.
